For beginning sports betters it can be confusing to keep all of the betting lingo straight. It is easy to be confused by all of the jargon, especially when the old-school bettors seem to know it all and throw it around with ease. Two of the most commonly used words when it comes to sports betting are parlays and teasers. Luckily, these two terms are not nearly as complicated as they may sound.

What is a Parlay?

A parlay is a bet that strings together multiple point spreads, total score, money line bets, or any combination of bets. This is done in order to increase the odds of a good payoff. When combining multiple types of betting like this, the person stands an increased chance of getting big money, as one thing might come through even if the others do not.

A teaser is a type of parlay in which the point spreads or totals can be adjusted to be in the favor of the bettor. The price is lower to move the point spreads or the total. This is called teasing, and it can result in a lower payoff for winning bets.

It is important to remember that a tie in a parlay or a teaser reduces the amount of plays in that parlay or teaser. In many cases the bet will be cancelled and the entire amount refunded for simplicity’s sake. Sports books work a bit differently from one another, so it is a good idea to find out for sure how they operate before placing a bet with them.
